Description
Raphael's 'Young Woman with Unicorn' was painted between 1505-1506, shortly before fox hunting with hounds became a formalized activity in England. Restoration work on the painting revealed the image of a small dog under the unicorn on the woman's lap. It's believed the original painting was a wedding present for the young woman in the painting (dogs represented fidelity). The supposition on why the dog was then replaced with a unicorn is that the wedding fell through and the bride's family wanted to convey to their daughter's next suitor that she was still a virgin (it was said only a virgin could tame a unicorn). My take on the painting presents a modern interpretation: the young woman couldn't give a hoot what people think of her; she's just getting on with business, rescuing foxes from dastardly hunters and returning bullets to their senders.
