I looked at all of the "humane" meat certification programs available in Canada (SPCA certified, Sobey's Certified Humane, Whole Foods/Global Animal Partnership, Animal Welfare Approved) and found some startling things - inspections are pre-announced across the board, most continue to allow farrowing crates for sows and only prohibit some mutilations or simply require painkillers - which most industry codes recommend already, and most of them fail to cover sourcing (hatcheries), transportation and slaughter. And of course they continue to see animals only as sources of protein rather than living, sentient beings worthy of life.
