Artist's Description
Although they have a natural life span of 20-25 years, cows used for dairy live just 3-5 years. By then, they are considered "spent" - their bones so calcium-depleted, their feet and legs so weak, and their bodies so emaciated that they can no longer keep up with the unnatural production demands for milk and so are sent to slaughter. Genetically though, a cow�s suffering does not end with her. Her newborns, who are immediately taken from her, are sold off to slaughter as veal or, if they unfortunate enough to be female with a gentle disposition, are put to work on the milking line to continue the cycle of cruelty.
